Edema: symptoms & solutionsUpdated 3 years ago

Overview

Edema happens when a plant’s roots take up too much water all at once. Hydraulic pressure can cause cells in the leaf to explode, leading to unsightly bruising and bumping. Fortunately, it’s not fatal but can be an early sign that you’re watering too much, which can lead to a much more serious case of root rot.

Symptoms

  • Bumps or round lesions across the leaf surface
  • Cracks
  • Extreme cases associated with root rot

Solutions

  • Water only when the soil is dry, and the plant appears thirsty (wrinkled or flaccid leaves)
  • Check the roots for rot.
