Should I put rocks at the bottom of the pot for drainage?Updated 2 years ago

No. It is a widespread myth that a layer of gravel at the bottom of a pot adds drainage. In fact, it increases the chance of rot.

A layer of rocks at the bottom of a pot decreases the volume of soil in the container. This means the water table, or the depth at which the soil is completely saturated will be higher, i.e. closer to the succulent's roots. It's especially troublesome in a pot without a drainage hole, because the rocks have large pores between them in which water can stagnate and breed bacteria and fungus.

Way to actually increase drainage for a potted succulent include:

  • Using a grittier soil with more rocky, mineral material and less organic matter, e.g. Bonsai Jack Gritty Mix
  • Using a pot with a drainage hole
  • Picking containers made of breathable materials like unglazed terracotta
