Succulent living walls & green roofs: what you should knowUpdated 3 years ago

Succulents make great options for living walls and green roofs because they are drought tolerant, can grow in less than 4" of soil, and require very little maintenance. You can find all of our living wall and green roofs varieties here.

Living Walls

  • Find your Hardiness Grow Zone to select varieties that can tolerate the average minimum temperature in your climate
  • Cover the soil medium with chicken wire to keep it from slipping or bulging
  • Plant in the spring or fall and allow at least 6 weeks for plants to establish roots before mounting vertically
  • Consider how you will irrigate the plants while they establish roots

Green Roofs

  • Ensure that the live-load capacity of the roof can support the soil and plants when fully saturated
  • Use a waterproof membrane and a root barrier between the roof deck and the drainage layer to prevent leaks
  • Consider how you will irrigate the plants while they establish roots
  • Plant in the spring or fall and allow at least 6 weeks for plants to establish roots before extreme heat or chance of frost
  • Find your Hardiness Grow Zone to select varieties that can tolerate the average minimum temperature in your climate
